    2. Hey, well we are all hoping for that but as an Omani citizen who know people working in the ROP, I don't think so. It is just a rumor but let's cross our fingers and hope for it. I have passed the drums (manual gear) but I haven't passed the slope :( so I still gotta do the slope and the driving test

  30. Update: (Dec 2014): To get an exemption from Drum & Slope tests, Just go to the ROP (Preferably ROP Seeb) with your Native Driving License (Laminated/ Card etc.., anything will do. But it should be 1 year Valid). ROP is not keen about the Embassy & Ministry of External Affairs attestation these days.

  40. Wonderful post Verghese. Really appreciate this post and time u spent on preparing these easy to understand guidelines. You've covered each and every thing, which expats need to know for driving license. I wish I could have read it quite earlier, and I am sure that it would have helped me to a great extent.

I started my driving sessions one and half year back. In between I took some long breaks. Today was my 7th try in Road Test in Muscat. Till 5th try, i can say that i did some or other mistakes. But during 6th and 7th, I can just say that I was not lucky. Both times, I just failed because someone abruptly entered the roundabout while I was already inside and was about to exit. Last time (my 6th try), one fellow in pick-up truck entered suddenly and the ROP applied brake to slow down my car, though I was in a controllable speed. And today even though I tried my best to take all precautions but still same situation arrived. ROP asked me to take u-turn from Roundabout and I took it successfully, almost. But exactly while exiting the roundabout, one person from right entered the roundabout even after seeing our car, and even after seeing the indicators. ROP suddenly caught my steering and gave horn (which I was supposed to do). Both times, single mistake. Well. I can only say my verdict here now for the people who are following this thread and who are still preparing for next road test :

Apart from learning Good Driving and all the necessary rules and regulations, we should also have presence of mind to take immediate WISE decision, in case others are doing mistakes in front of us, which is eventually going to affect us. With today's failure I have learned this lesson, and I am ready for my next try. Friends, we should lose hope at any cost, Till now I have spent more than 700 OMR in just training sessions and tests right from my first day. My trainer is charging little higher compared to others in every test which i don't want to mention here, he will be having his reasons and requirements. But he is a good guy and he taught me very well. Some of my friends advised me to change trainer, Some advised me to go other places in Oman and get license. But after all, I have to live in Muscat with my family, I want to pass my test in this place only. And what the trainer will do if its not in our luck today.

As we fail, we always blame strictness of ROP or some road conditions (like I was blaming till today after failing), but always think about your family. Today some plus or minus will happen to us due to our wrong driving, then the situation will be unpredictable. Like today. When that person entered the roundabout suddenly, I should have alerted him with the horn. The car following us especially while turning in roundabout is always trusting us and follow unless its a heavy vehicle or big SUVs which can view every thing even in front of our car. They can also hit us if we don't take "quick-n-wise" decision. I was just imagining, if I will be driving with my wife and my only 9m baby, in my car, and this kind of situation would have occurred then.... So with more failure I am getting more better. (I am not telling that people getting license in lesser tries are not good. My wife got license in her first try, 4 years back, and she is driving our car so perfectly, I should have started my driving before her :-) well i was bit lazy that time :-)). Ya, I agree, every time we fail, its hard time for us especially while paying money to our trainer (hardly 10 Rial less, than which we can give him after passing). This feeling will be with all of us, after all its our hard earned money which we are earning away from our country for our family. But its their occupation. We cannot think that we are paying extra for getting a failure. My personal opinion is "God knows better than us, what is better for us and when". After all its one time investment.

But still I have hope that I will get my license in next try and I will come back to this thread and post my experience.

  52. MUST READ IT BEFORE SELECT A TRAINER
3i wud like to add 2 important things

1ST When you select a trainer ( mudarrib) make sure he has the permit license ( tasreeh) of instructing otherwise at the day of test he will give u a new instructor mob no n dis instructor will be with you at backset with another car that u might have no idea can be gud one or bad one in other words u will be fail for sure even if u go 20 times for road test. do not let your instructor change the car for any cost even if drum test .
2nd thing make sure your instructor has a good condition car
the best and easy thing to know it is gear movement of the car if it stucks at the tym of of taking from reverse to 1st gear it means there is a problem in gear box of the car while ur instructor will tell you that u r nt doing it in rite way and after 10 hours of driving eventuallyu will be messed up with it and than u will tell him to change the gear he will tell you release the half clutch n press it again than change the gear he is lying to you the instructor will never except his mistake and even if u learn his way of changing the gear by realeasing and pressing the clutch again at the day of test poilce will fail u because car is nt supposed to be driven dis way
So the best way to save your hardly earn money check the car's condition first if u r nt satisfied leave him and the car immediately n look for another one.
3rd also make sure the nearest test area like im in ghubra nearest to me is QURM but because i was new in oman i used to go seeb which means if i take 2 hour of learning class 1 hour is for the distance from me to seeb in other words i was paying 14 rials for 1 hour classes.

i just dont want others to waste money like me

I have Dubai automatic license, but came to know its of no use. So I have open new book and looking for an honest instructor who can train me to get Omani license at the earliest possible time. Can any one suggest me and give useful advice regarding instructor and their payment term. More over I stay in Falaj which is approx. 30 Km from Sohar toward Liwa, so transportation daily for driving is also one of the biggest challenge a part from managing time in office.

  79. Thanks BV for the nice post...one suggestion for someone who is looking for a driving instructor...as someone already mentioned, check if the instructor you are engaging has a valid license from ROP for training. Its a green color card with their photo and other details on it. If the trainer does not have this, you will be forced to go with someone else on the day of the test (may be same car or other car). In any case, this trainer will not bother to give you correct feedback as he is only concerned about taking his share of 15 rials which he already got from your trainer. I am telling this from my own experience. One more suggestion is never ever go to Muscat Driving School, they are the worst in this field. They only know how to make money and moreover they only have around 3-4 certified trainers all others are not certified. Best of luck to all for your tests.

  102. Benjamin Stupendous work and excellent way of advising. You have done a tremendous hard work for this article.

Today I passed my road test in the 5th attempt because of God's grace. Each police will take you to different places. Some important rules I learnt was always be patient on the road, Stop wherever there is a stop line even if the road is deserted with no traffic at all, roundabout speed should not exceed 40 km/h, wait in the roundabout till your turn comes, never ever enter the roundabout when a car is coming, you can wait as long as you can but dont be tensed even if the back car honks at you. Taking U turns be careful and maintain your speed.

Instructors selection should be done carefully. I have done in this way, I talked to 3 instructors and selected who knows good spoken English and somewhat young.

Important thing to keep in mind is that dont tell anyone before going for a test. You will be half relieved if noone knows about your test. ITS ALL UPTO YOUR CONFIDENCE AND FORTUNE LEVEL. 15% LUCK IS NECESSARY FOR PASSING.

    ALL THE BEST GUYS.

    Shyamal

  106. Hi Guys,

Getting DL in Oman is not so difficult if you know how to drive and have control on your nerves(don't get panic) think as the police man is your friend, be attentive to his orders but don't loose focus from the road, be confident not over confident. Its nothing like they don't want to give you licence unless you know how to drive, be cool and enjoy your test day. The best way to get DL in first test is to know how Drive. And another way is to get a better trainer. I met one who is gem of a person i will share his contact below, he helped me to get DL in just one training and one test. As i have driven for more than 6 years in GCC i did not had much driving problems here in oman. It is a bit difficult to get DL when you are new to Left Hand Drive. But Trust me if you have self confidence you can do it, just trust in your self keep that positive attitude when you go for test. The Instruction given by admin is most useful and will help you understand the better way. Trainers Contacts are as follows he is available in Muscat

  107. Hi Benjamin

First of all my sincere appreciation for the effort you put in creating this wonderful document. It really helps me personally. I have given one attempt in Road Test but failed. Though I don't regret, I take it as an experience and willing to work on the feedback given by ROP during the Road Test. While I analyse myself in details, I find one more input would be helpful, if you have already got about it. The evaluation page in the driving license book, in which ROP have given his feedback against each parameters which is given only in Arabic. Do you have that page translated with any valuable inputs from that for us? Please reply if you're still on to it. Once again thank you and appreciate your dedication.

    With best regards

  121. Very constructive post; Thank you Benjamin. Still working on my skills to get a Licence afetr failing in two Tests.

Based on my bitter experience, my strong suggestion is that one should not enter into contract with Instructors.

After a lot of struggle I have now identified a good Instructor: Yunus Al Balushi, +96892911660. He works on daily payment basis and operates only in Darsait area. Good luck!

  123. One important advice as given which I ignored today because of my shyness is that of changing car and instructor on your test day. I failed the drum test because the instructor that had been training me didn't show up today. He sent someone and there was a language barrier which demoralised me from the beginning. The dude still collected 25 OMR from me. Please my advice: Don't be shied. Its your money. Ask the instructor from the begining whether you will use the car you are used to. Am really sad today.

  148. Thanks for the useful tips. I passed my road test today on the 6th attempt. I would have gotten it on the 5th but the police said I stood on the wrong side of the roundabout which I doubt because the line is cut on it toward the place I was heading. I was asked to go full roundabout and headed to the same direction the last time. I got it. Thanks for the tips.
